It's a Big State
California has more than 35 million people living in it, each and every one of them unique with their own needs, plans and goals. It is therefore, no surprise that health insurance companies offer a bevy of choices when it comes to keeping citizens of the state healthy. Here is some information on a few of them:
- PPO:
- HMO:
- Network:
- Indemnity Plan:
(Preferred Provider Organization) A type of managed healthcare insurance plan that allows you to visit any in-network physician or healthcare provider you want without needing a referral from a primary care doctor. If you select a PPO, you will not be required to choose a PCP (primary care physician), but can refer yourself to in-plan specialists you choose. These plans may require that you pay an annual deductible before coverage begins.
(Health Maintenance Organization) A health insurance plan or organization that provides comprehensive healthcare services through a network of doctors, hospitals, and labs who provide services at a pre-negotiated rate. While in an HMO you will need to see your PCP (primary care physician) if you need to be referred to a specialist except in an emergency. Your choice of doctors is restricted to those in the network. Using a doctor that is not in the network will usually mean that you have to pay the cost of services provided completely out of pocket.
A network of doctors, hospitals, labs and healthcare providers that provide medical services to members at discounted rates. Members are free to use any healthcare provider, it is less expensive to stay within the network.
An insurance plan that reimburses the member for a certain percentage of the charges for services provided - usually after a deductible amount is reached. Indemnity plans typically have no restrictions on which providers a member may visit for services. These plans offer great freedom for choosing your healthcare provider but often come at a higher out-of pocket price and require more paperwork.
